Along the coast of County Clare, just south of the Cliffs of Moher, lies a stretch of sea steeped in folklore and mystery. Beneath the waters of Liscannor Bay, local legend tells of a lost city known as Kilstiffin, a place said to have disappeared beneath the waves centuries ago.

Like many Irish legends, the story has been passed down through generations, blending history, imagination, and a deep connection to the landscape. It is this tale that inspired one of our most distinctive soaps: Hidden City.

The Legend of Kilstiffin

According to local folklore, Kilstiffin was once a prosperous settlement located near the shores of Liscannor Bay. The city was protected by a gate that could only be opened with a special key. One day, the keeper of the key fell asleep, and the key was lost to the sea.

Without it, the gate could not be secured. The ocean rushed in, and the city was swallowed beneath the waves, disappearing forever from sight.

Some versions of the story say that the ruins of the city can still be glimpsed beneath the water on exceptionally calm days. Others claim that the bells of Kilstiffin can occasionally be heard ringing beneath the sea.

Whether fact or folklore, the story remains woven into the identity of this coastline, adding another layer of mystery to an already dramatic landscape.

From Folklore to Soap

When creating Hidden City, we wanted to capture the atmosphere of this lost world beneath the Atlantic.

The design reflects elements of the legend itself. Swirls of white, black, and orange run through the soap, inspired by the sea, the hidden reef, and the lost key that features so prominently in the story.

The fragrance was chosen to evoke a sense of mystery and depth. Warm citrus notes mingle with rich woods and earthy botanicals, creating a scent that feels both uplifting and intriguing.

Like the legend that inspired it, Hidden City invites you to pause, imagine, and connect with a place where history, landscape, and storytelling meet.
